Installing irrigations systems these days — especially in home landscapes — is no longer just a matter of keeping the yard well watered. As Craig Hall of Hall Sprinkler Company points out, today’s highly sophisticated systems not only make life easier and add significantly to a property’s value, they are also very beneficial to the environment:

• Just the right amount of vital moisture can be individually supplied to adjacent plantings with widely-varied water requirements.

• Precious water conservation can be enhanced with specific timing and application techniques so pointless loss of water to evaporation is minimized.

• Programming advances make it possible to “read” weather conditions so that water won’t be wasted if unexpected changes in precipitation occur.

“Thinking Green” is a byword these days, Hall says, as more customers are becoming familiar with energy-saving terminology such as drip irrigation, micro sprays and rain and freeze sensors.

Irrigation systems, Craig explains, range from the simplest connections to complex networks of pipes, valves, sprinkler heads, electrical connections and a potential host of devices to help the system reach optimum efficiency. For this reason, it is essential that experienced personnel oversee the design, installation and maintenance.

And, he adds, all the “inner workings” must be cleverly integrated into the aesthetic design of the landscape so that it functions effortlessly with as little visual support system as possible.

The success of a system, says Craig Hall, will be directly related to the competency, experience, reliability and specialized skill level of the installation contractor.

With over 70 years experience in the irrigation industry, Hall Sprinkler Company has been amassing knowledge and skills from day one when George R. Hall started the Houston Lawn Irrigation Company in 1939.

With a short break due to WWII’s material shortages, the company has continuously served the State of Texas’ ever-expanding irrigation needs. George, his father Edwin and brother Conway expanded the company with on-site offices to service customers in Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth and Austin. Irrigation customers range north, south, east and west throughout the state and beyond, such as a recent installation in Orlando, FL, explain Craig, a second generation Hall to be involved in the family-owned business.

Eleven installation crews and eight service crews are among the 60+ employees statewide always in touch with industry advances to service the irrigation needs of their customers. Many have been with the company since the early days, one as long as 47 years and 11 for over 30 years. Fully licensed and insured supervisors guarantee 100 percent client satisfaction.

The continuity of such a stable, experienced company is essential to a successfully installed and maintained irrigation system, whether in a home or professional landscape.

What should you look for in an installation contractor? Craig Hall says you should expect your contractor to:

•  Personally view your property.

• Ask about or determine for himself the soil conditions, water sources, planting materials and your own personal plans for, and use of, the areas.

• Give you a detailed plan of what he proposes to do, with specific pricing that covers all materials and total installation.

• Offer you additional options that can be added at that point or at a later date.

• Explain specifics of the installation in as much detail as you would like.

•  Describe in detail any and all disruptions of the existing foliage and how such disruptions will be remedied.

• Give you a time frame in which all installation and remedial work will be completed.

• Thoroughly explain warranty information and maintenance options.

• Offer to provide recommendations from satisfied customers who can be personally contacted.

Craig points out that not all irrigation products work in all situations.  He says a competent irrigation contractor will welcome a client’s questions, and won’t mind explaining why he is choosing specific types and brand names of controllers, valves, rotors, spray heads and other equipment.
